Villany Siklos

Location and Topography: Villany-Siklos Wine Region consists of a single area formed by two sub-regions. Villany is to the East and centered on the town of Villany; to the West is the sub-region centered on the towns of Siklos and Harkany. Villany-Siklos is a small area of hills rising out of the plains in South Hungary just 10km from the Croatian Border. The Region is the southernmost in Hungary.
History: Villany-Siklos has been a wine making area since Roman times. After the Turkish invasionthe area was carved up into estates which were handed to some of the generals who had helped in the liberation. These estates were the foundation of a prosperous wine industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the Turkish occupation the region became depopulated and Swabian immigrants were encouraged to re-develop the vinyards after after this period of neglect. At the turn of the 21st century their descendents are picking up the pieces of the wine industry once more, with much success.Villany is today the wine region with the highest reputation in Hungary.

Wine Styles Villany produces full-bodied red wines with high levels of tannins. The wines of Villany are reputed to be the best in the country and the high number of good and exceptional winemakers bear this out. White wine production is weighted towards Siklos
