| Location: |
The Tolna Wine Region is located around 100km south of Budapest on the Western side of the Danube. The disjointed region consists of 12 separate areas to the North and West of the Szekszard Wine Region. The part of the region around Paks runs along the Danube shore. Unfortunately, amongst many Hungarians the best known feature of Paks is its leaky and accident prone nuclear power station. |
| History: |
Vinegrowing has had an old tradition in parts of the Tolna region - it can be traced back to the Roman times. Under Turkish occupation the most of the vinyards were abandoned and the region became generally depopulated as people sought exile in Western Hungary and Transylvania. In the Seventeenth Century Austrian and German settlers played a very important role in rebuilding wine production in the region. When they were repatriated after the Second World War the region lost many of its its skilled winemakers. Under communism the region faired well as its flat land made for easy mass production. Today producers making wine on an industrial scale dominate the region. |
