Olaszrizling
Olasz Rizling (also known as Welsch Riesling) is one of the most commonly found varieties in Hungary. It was introduced from France in the mid to late 19th Century and was frequently used during the plantings hat followed the phyloxera outbreak of the 1870s and 1880s.
Sometimes incorrectly referred in Hungary as "rizling" this grape is not to be confused with the german "Reinisch Riesling" variety which is hardly ever found in Hungary.
Cultivation: Olasz Rizling can be successfully grown with most vine training systems and produces small clusters of small berries.
Olasz Rizling is a late ripening variety and thus prefers warmer locations and south facing slopes. It produces reliably consistent quality most years, but it sometimes suffers from downey and powdery mildew.
Wine Style: Olasz Rizling produces wines with a delicate aroma sometimes tasting of bitter almonds. Olasz Rizling reacts well to barrel ageing.
Distribution: Olasz Rizling is popular in Badacsony, Csopak, Eger, and can be found in most regions with the notable exception of Tokaj.
