Kunsag
Pronunciation:
Location and Topography: Kunsag is by far the largest, most disperate and most geographically contrived wine region in Hungary. Its 14 separate areas are scattered across the plains mainly between the Danube and Tiszta Rivers, stretching from the Serbian border in the South, all the way to the edge of Budapest in the North. Such a wide ranging region defies detailed description and any pockets of quality are dismissed along with the rest of the region.
History: There was little wine production on Kunsag prior to end of the ninteenth century. It was discovered that the otherwise unexceptional soils of the Hungarian Great Plains provided immunity from the phylloxera outbreak that decimated the vines elsewhere. In such a wide ranging region any pockets of quality are all too easily dismissed along with the rest.
Soil: The soils of Kunsag vary, but tend to be sandy and lacking in nutrients.

Climate:

Hot and dry in the summer, cold in the winter. Obviously there is some temperature variation from North to South.
Characteristic
varieties
Ezerjó, Kövidinka, Aranysárfehér, Kadarka, Zolt Veltelini.
Wine Styles It unfair to generalise when addressing such a disparate wine region, but generalise I will: Kunsag wines tend to be described as drinkable rather than great.
Area 25935ha
78% white wine
22% red wine
