Harslevelu
Harslevelu (literally meaning: linden leaf) is thought to be an ancient Hungarian variety. As long as two hundred years ago Harslevelu was commonly grown in most parts of Hungary. Today Harslevelu is only really popular in Tokaj where it represents 20% of production.
Cultivation:
Harslevelu is a vigorous vine that is easy to manage, producing large clusters of grapes that are easy to harvest. Harslevelu is also a high yielding variety - not without reason is it called the growers' friend. Over cropping can be a problem, however, making the grapes hard to ripen. Harslevelu is a late ripening variety, not being ready until the second part of October. It tends to botrytis.
Wine Style:
In good years Harslevelu can produce botryzed aszu wines of the highest quality. Harslevelu can also produce good quality non botryzed wines with a rich aroma.
Distribution:
As well as Tokaj Harslevelu is found in Somlo, Sopron, Eger and Villany.
