Furmint
Furmint
A native Hungarian Variety, Furmint originated from the Szeremseg region in what is now Croatia. Furmint has been known for hundreds of years.
Cultivation:
The Furmint vine produces vigorous growth and requires some green pruning. It produces large clusters of large berries. Whilst Furmint tolerates most soils it needs sheltered warmer locations. Furmint is a late ripening variety, not reaching complete ripeness until the latter part of October, and thus has a tendency to rot. Furmint also tends to botrytis and is the most common wine in Tokaj.
Wine Style:
The Furmint grape produces a characteristic aroma. Furmint a can produce a good reductive wines with the right equipment, its forte is the fuller bodied wine it develops ito when well aged.
Distribution:
Furmint is the most popular wine in Tokaj, representing around 70% of the plantings there. It is also grown successfully in Somlo and Matraaljia.
