Csongrad
Pronunciation:
Location and Topography: Csongrad is the Eastern most of the three Great Plains Regions. Csongrad consists of 2 areas, one in the South centered on Morahalom. The River Tisza flows along the edge of the second area which is centered on the town of Csongrad.
History: When phylloxera devastated most of the vines in Hungary it was discovered that the bug could not survive in the sandy soils of the Great plains. Because of this, production here was expanded. In the 1960s and 1970s the flat terrain was seen as ideal for the industrial scale wine production that was in vogue during communist times. It was during that period that Csongrad underwent its greatest expansion.
