Buukaljia
Pronunciation:
Location: The vineyards of Bukkalja are located on the south and southwest facing slopes of the Bükk mountains which rise to 959m in North Eastern Hungary. The wine region is located to the Southwest of Miskolc and borders the Wine Region of Eger to the West. The Bukkalja Wine Region consists of three separate areas: the main contiguous region and two outliers to the Northeast.
History: As far back as the Middle Ages extensive cellars were dug in the limestone. The hillside at Avas, was at one time covered in very productive vinyards, a fact illustrated by the hundreds of cellars hollowed out of its slopes. Today the grapes from this region are more likely to be used as the base for sparkling wines.
Soil: Loess on a tufa base.

Climate:

Adequate sunshine, but cooler than other areas due to its more Northern and Westerly location mean ripening is often a problem.
Characteristic
varieties
Only white varieties are successful here: Olaszrizling, Leányka are typical.
Wine Styles The fiery, characteristic white wines of the region have distictintive acid composition, combined with arichness in fragrance and aroma.
