Balaton Felvidek
Pronunciation:
Location and Topography: Balatonfelvidek is a slightly contrived region consisting of 3 separate areas to the East West and North of the Badacsony Region. Balatonfelvidek means Balaton Uplands or Highlands; such descriptions are relative and this being Hungary the highlands, whilst not flat, are not noticably high. The region includes part of the Balaton North shore.
History: The area to the North is centered on the town of Sumeg. Sumeg was once a free standing wine region in itself. Prior to 1999 Balatonfelvidek Wine Region was known as Balatonmelleke.
Soil: Mainly limestone and chalky soils with bassalt rock in some areas.

Climate:

Whilst part of he region borders the Balaton Lake the rather flat terrain means it shares less of the microclimactic qualities seen on the slopes of Badacsony and Balatonfured.
