Badacsony Wine Region, Hungary
Badacsony
Pronunciation:
Location:
Badacsony is the middle of the three wine regions on the North shore of Lake Balaton. The Badacsony Wine Region is one contiguous region skirting the Balaton from Szigliget in the West to Revfulop in the East and running inland to Tapolca.
History:
Winemaking in Badacsony has a long history; the area has long been one of Hungary's best known wine regions and one of its most popular tourist destinations. Tourism has however meant that winemaking has had to give way to holiday homes when it comes to land use.
Soil:
The volcanic bedrock is covered with rich soils.
Climate:
The south facing slopes of the of the volcanic hills reach right to the shore of Lake Balaton. This gives the southern part of the region a sub-mediterranean character, with alot of sunshine, and good shelter from the North winds. The vast expanse of Lake Balaton provides a warming effect during the autumn and a large amount of sunshine is reflected from the surface of the lake. All this only applies to the plots overlooking the lake; the northern part of the region is far less outstanding.
